Pune: A 34-year-old woman from Pune was allegedly cheated of Rs nine lakh by a man she met on a matrimonial website.

The woman works as a team leader in a private company. A few months ago, she created an account on a matrimonial site Jeevansathi.com. She got a request from the accused, who introduced himself as Sameer Joshi, and told her that he resided in Malaysia. He informed her that he is back in India, and they met each other.

He lured the woman into marriage and duped her of Rs nine lakh on the pretext of buying some computers and other expensive accessories. The suspect and victim met a few times during which he gained her confidence and lured her into marriage. The incident took place till February this year.

Meanwhile, after receiving the amount, the suspect never had a word with the woman. He blocked her on the messaging application and did not return her calls.

When the victim realised that the man could be a fraudster, she approached the police. Initial investigations revealed that the man who identified as Sameer Joshi, was a resident of Satara and his real name is Jagannath Patkule. The woman has complained about this matter. The police have booked Patkule, hailing from Satara. Assistant Police Inspector Vikas Raut is probing the matter.
