World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz maneuvered through a remarkable and occasionally testing play, at the Hard Rock Stadium on Friday evening, defeating 19-year-old Brazilian sensation Joao Fonseca in straight sets. The 6-4, 6-4 victory sees the Spaniard reach the third round, moving to a 17-1 record for the 2026 season. Despite the raucous support for the teenage underdog, Alcaraz remained composed, breaking early in both sets to blunt Fonseca's aggressive game.

Navigating the noise

A crowd of 16,000, bolstered by Miami’s Latin population, created an atmosphere Alcaraz described as "incredible," despite attempts from some spectators to distract him during his service motion.

Alcaraz, acting as the "elder statesman" at just 22, used his defensive variety to suffocate Fonseca’s power. The Brazilian, who recently broke into the top 40, was unable to record a single forehand winner in the opening set as Alcaraz consistently shrunk the court with his speed.

Alcaraz on the next "Big thing"

Reflecting on his victory, Alcaraz was full of praise for his 19-year-old opponent, drawing parallels to his own meteoric rise.

I was really good from the beginning until the last ball. I know how good Joao is, and that’s why I was really focused... He reminds me a lot [of me] when I was his age and just coming up. Sometimes he missed a lot of easy balls because he doesn’t choose the right shots... but for sure he’s going to do it.

On the hostile crowd:

I enjoyed the atmosphere so much... I didn’t want to silence anybody. I just wanted to just do my stuff, do my job and trying to play my best.

Road to the third round

  • Redemption: This win is particularly sweet for Alcaraz, who was stunned in his opening match in Miami last year by David Goffin.

  • Young gun specialist: Alcaraz improved to 13-0 against younger opponents at the tour level.

  • Season of dominance: His 17-1 start to the year includes an Australian Open title, making him the youngest man to complete a career Grand Slam.

  • Major upset: While the top seed progressed, the tournament saw a significant casualty as Casper Ruud was knocked out in the early rounds.

  • Next opponent: Alcaraz will face American Sebastian Korda, who swept past Camilo Ugo Carabelli 6-0, 6-3.
