The 22-year-old Spaniard, who dominated in Paris in both 2024 and 2025, will forgo a bid for a third consecutive title as he focuses on safeguarding the long-term health of his right wrist. It marks a difficult period for a player who, only months earlier, became the youngest man ever to secure a career Grand Slam with a landmark victory at the Australian Open.

Choosing longevity over legacy

The injury, sustained during his first-round match against Otto Virtanen in Barcelona, proved too stubborn to overcome. Despite a hopeful appearance at the Laureus Awards in Madrid earlier this week, where he was named World Sportsman of the Year, the protective cast on his arm told a more ominous story than any press release could.

After the results of the tests carried out today, we have decided that the most prudent thing to do is to be cautious and not participate in Rome or Roland Garros. This is a difficult time for me, but I am sure we will come out of it stronger.

"Tennis needs Carlos": Rival’s tribute

Although Jannik Sinner now has a clear golden opportunity to pursue a career Grand Slam, he was anything but jubilant. Having recently overtaken Alcaraz to secure the World No. 1 ranking after the Monte Carlo final, the Italian openly emphasized how crucial the Spaniard is to the sport.

I think what’s most important is to say that, first of all, tennis needs Carlos. Tennis is a much better sport when he’s around. For me personally it’s nice when he’s around. It makes me look also in the draw and see the matches in a different way, even though if I would face Carlos it would always be in the final.

Alcaraz now faces the decision of whether he will be fit enough to compete at Wimbledon and throughout the rest of the grass-court swing, which starts right after the French Open. His eagerness to get back on court must be balanced with prudence. Wrist injuries are especially problematic in tennis, as the joint absorbs significant stress with every shot. Coming back prematurely could result in lasting damage.

I do believe he’s going to come back stronger than before. But injuries are always tough, especially a wrist. There’s certain areas of our body what are very sensitive. The wrist, we saw with also other players in the past, that they can complicate our life. So I hope he’s going to come back and he will not have any further injuries.

Power vacuum in Paris

With the two-time defending champion sidelined, the 2026 French Open draw decisivley opens up.

  • Jannik Sinner: The man to beat as he hunts the only major missing from his collection.

  • Novak Djokovic: At nearly 39, the legend gets one more clear shot at an elusive 25th major.

  • Alexander Zverev: Still seeking his first Slam, the door has never been wider.

Carlos Alcaraz may be the most electrifying player in tennis right now, but his body has issued a clear warning. Wrist injuries can end careers in this sport, and by withdrawing from Roland Garros, Alcaraz is prioritizing the next decade over the next few days. For fans in Paris, the absence of the "Tiger of Murcia" is a bitter disappointment, yet for tennis as a whole, having a fully fit Alcaraz in 2027, might be a far greater gain than seeing him risk it in 2026.
