Ashwani Kumar outshines Mumbai Indians' bowling elite by kicking the door open

Despite his ₹30 lakh price tag, Kumar’s performance earned 4 wickets for 24 runs at a 6.00 economy rate, while players like Shardul Thakur, Boult, etc have struggled with an economy rate beyond 10 this season

Mumbai Indians invested in a world-class weapon, but it was a ₹30-lakh blade that inflicted the real damage on Monday night. While the franchise has spent much of the 2026 season waiting for Trent Boult to live up to his hefty price tag, it was Ashwani Kumar, a fast bowler who once rode a bicycle 11km to training to save a ₹30 rickshaw fare, who clinically tore through the Gujarat Titans.

In a display that closely mirrored his four-wicket debut last season, the 24-year-old from Punjab produced figures of 4 for 24. His scalps were far from lower-order batters; he removed Shubman Gill, Rahul Tewatia, Rashid Khan, and Shahrukh Khan, effectively shutting down any chance of a Titans comeback.

Canvas shoes to IPL limelight

Ashwani’s journey to the Narendra Modi Stadium is the stuff of local folklore. His brother, Shiv Rana, recalled the days when Ashwani would bowl in simple canvas shoes, urging village youth to reach the school ground at 5:00 AM to bat against him.

Rain or hot sun, Ashwani would never hesitate... I remember he would take ₹30 from me for the fare. When he was picked up for ₹30 lakh, I knew his worth was every penny. After each wicket today, I thought about those days when he would return at 10:00 PM and wake up again at 5:00 AM.

Reputation or utility?

The numbers behind MI’s marquee fast-bowling signing, Trent Boult, are growing increasingly difficult to ignore. Over three matches, Boult has conceded 110 runs while taking just a single wicket. During the powerplay, the phase he was expressly brought in to dominate, his economy rate has climbed to a worrying 14.00.

In contrast, Ashwani Kumar delivered a fully rounded performance in Match 30. He executed a pre-planned strategy devised with captain Hardik Pandya, relying on back-of-a-length deliveries on a surface that required strict bowling discipline.

  • Gill wicket: Methodically lured the GT captain into a catch at deep square leg.

  • Middle-order: Allowed only four boundaries in 24 balls.

  • Financial swing: Ashwani’s single-game impact was valued at ₹1.24 crore, more than ten times Boult’s entire tournament contribution to date.

Efficiency over pedigree?

Ashwani’s performance has redirected the Mumbai Indians’ narrative from legacy to practical impact. Boult may have the reputation, but Ashwani brings current form and situational relevance. The Punjab fast bowler’s feat of delivering 14 dot balls in a high-pressure setting created the defensive platform that enabled MI to clinch their 99-run win.

When we went on the ground I saw length balls would work best so just went for those. I planned with Hardik bhaiiya and bowled as per what the situation demanded. I had been thinking for a while that whenever I get a game, I'll do well. It happened like that last year as well.

Rookie’s rise

  • Repeat heroics: Last year, Ashwani took four wickets in his maiden match against KKR. He repeated the feat on Monday in his first appearance of the 2026 season.

  • Elite economy: His 6.00 economy rate was the lowest of any frontline bowler in the match.

  • No sixes conceded: Despite facing some of the league's biggest hitters, Ashwani did not concede a single maximum.
