Mumbai Indians’ (MI) latest debutant, Ashwani Kumar, made headlines with a record-breaking performance against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Wankhede Stadium. The 23-year-old left-arm pacer from Punjab delivered a sensational spell, picking up 4 wickets for 24 runs in just three overs, becoming the first Indian bowler to take four wickets on IPL debut.
Ashwani struck gold on his very first ball in the IPL, dismissing KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane for just 11 runs. This placed him in an elite group of bowlers who have taken a wicket on their debut ball, including Ishant Sharma and Alzarri Joseph. Ashwani’s figures of 4/24 are the best by an Indian bowler on IPL debut, breaking a record that stood for 17 years.
During the post-match interview, Ashwani shared his emotions:
"I felt very good; there was pressure but the team environment helped me settle down. I didn’t have lunch today—just ate a banana because I wasn’t hungry due to nerves. Hardik bhai told me to back my skills and bowl into the wicket. Everyone back in my village will be watching this; I’m so happy to get this opportunity."
Ashwani Kumar is yet another gem unearthed by MI’s renowned scouting system. Bought for just ₹50 lakh during the IPL 2025 mega auction, Ashwani impressed MI scouts with his death bowling skills during the Sher-E-Punjab T20 Trophy in 2024. Despite limited domestic exposure, his deceptive bouncers and pace variations proved effective against KKR’s lineup.
Ashwani’s heroics played a pivotal role in MI securing their first win of IPL 2025 with an emphatic eight-wicket victory. Alongside Deepak Chahar (2/19), MI’s bowling attack dismantled KKR’s batting order, giving their campaign a strong boost.
Ashwani Kumar’s debut performance has not only etched his name into IPL history but also showcased his potential as a future match-winner for Mumbai Indians. As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on this young pacer from Jhanjeri, Punjab, who has already made a lasting impact on cricket’s grandest stage.
