Zverev stunned out of the US Open; Auger-Aliassime pulls of career best, period
Canada's Félix Auger-Aliassime has pulled off one of the biggest wins of his career at the 2025 US Open, stunning world number three Alexander Zverev in a thrilling four-set match. The victory, a 4-6, 7-6(9/7), 6-4, 6-4 comeback, sends the Canadian to the fourth round at Flushing Meadows for the first time since his semifinal run in 2021.
The match, which lasted nearly four hours, saw the German third seed take an early lead, breaking Auger-Aliassime to secure the first set. Zverev, who was the 2020 US Open runner-up, seemed poised to take control of the second set, holding a set point in the tiebreak. However, Auger-Aliassime fought back with fearless shotmaking, saving the set point and ultimately winning the tiebreak with a lucky net cord. This momentum shift was pivotal, as the match was leveled at one set all.
The third set saw the Canadian, seeded 25th, elevate his game, securing an early break and hitting sharp winners that visibly frustrated Zverev, who smashed his racket as the set slipped away. Auger-Aliassime took full control in the fourth, breaking his opponent to love and never looking back. He served out the match to secure the decisive victory in front of a loud crowd at Louis Armstrong Stadium.
This result marks Zverev’s earliest US Open exit since 2018, compounding a difficult season that also saw him crash out of Wimbledon in the first round. For Auger-Aliassime, the win is a major statement. "I'm still young, but it's been a few years and I'm working my way... This feels really good," the 25-year-old said after the match. "The job's not done. Tournament is still going. But this means a lot to me. A lot of hard work. Many years of it."
With the win, Auger-Aliassime moves on to face Russian Andrey Rublev in the next round. The victory is particularly significant as it is the first time in his career that he has defeated a top-five ranked player at a Grand Slam, underscoring his potential to go deep in the tournament.
