Jannik Sinner secured his third consecutive China Open semifinal spot on Monday, defeating Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan 6-1, 7-5 in straight sets. The Italian world number two overcame a mid-match challenge to advance in Beijing, continuing his strong form as he seeks to narrow the gap on world number one Carlos Alcaraz. Sinner now progresses to face the third seed, Alex de Minaur, against whom he holds a perfect 10-0 head-to-head record.
Sinner dominated the opening set, winning it with ease in just 26 minutes. However, the Hungarian, ranked 57th, offered a stiffer resistance in the second set, breaking Sinner’s serve to take a 5-4 lead. This break spurred Sinner into action, and he responded immediately by winning the next three games, to seal the set and the match in one hour and 19 minutes. "Generally, I’m very happy with today’s performance," Sinner said after the match, adding, "Every match is different. Let’s see what’s coming."
The victory marks his 40th tour-level match win of the season and puts him in a strong position to challenge for the title in Beijing.
In the women's draw, top seed Iga Swiatek advanced to the last 16 under unusual circumstances. The Polish star won the first set 6-0 against Camila Osorio before the Colombian opponent retired hurt. Swiatek will next face Emma Navarro of the United States. Swiatek’s seamless advance follows a pattern of high-level competition among other players in the draw.
The last 16 also saw wins for Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk and Russia’s Mirra Andreeva, inching them closer to a potential semifinal match-up. Fourth seed Andreeva defeated Spain’s Jessica Bouzas 6-4, 6-1, while Kostyuk overcame Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus 6-4, 6-2.
