Coach Anup Kumar confident ahead of Season 7 opener

CHENNAI: In his new avatar as coach, Anup Kumar exuded confidence of steering his side Puneri Paltan in the Season 7 to a creditable finish as it readies for its season-opener in Hyderabad on Monday.

Speaking to Sakal Times on the eve of their first game of the season against Haryana Steelers, Kumar said he wanted to pass on his knowledge of the game to the youngsters as a coach.

“I decided to help other players better their game, and that’s why I chose coaching over commentary. I’m happy so far with that decision, it’s been enjoyable,” said the experienced campaigner.

Kumar said he has been happy with the team’s training sessions leading upto the tournament and is confident about the team’s chances.

“Training has been great. I’m happy with how we’ve worked as a team during the sessions we had in Pune. I have addressed all the shortcomings I had noticed at the start, and I’m happy with how we are shaping up,” added the former India captain.

NEW BUT MUCH EXPERIENCED LEADER
The team will operate under a new leader in Surjeet Singh, who takes over the mantle from fellow defender Girish Ernak. Kumar admitted that Singh was made captain owing to his strong decision-making ability on court and the manner in which he inspires his teammates.

The combination of Ernak and Singh in defense will be vital for the team’s chances in the opening game and throughout the competition, and Kumar is glad with their tuning so far, as he said, “They are both very experienced players and a lot rides on their combination. I hope they carry on with the same in the tournament.”

OPTIONS GALORE
Tomar was a lone warrior in the raiding department for the team last season, even though he played just half of the games throughout the season due to injury. The team has brought in reinforcements this season to aid Tomar, making coach Kumar a happy man.

“We have enough depth in both raiding and defending departments this season, giving us the liberty to make substitutions as and when needed. That’s good to have as a coach,” added Kumar.

Going into Monday’s game, the 35-year old is pumped up about the team’s morale and says they will leave no stone unturned in pursuit of the title. “Jee jaan laga denge (Will give it our all),” said Kumar, signing off.
