Across the first 21 matches of IPL 2026, no side had managed to defend a total below 200, until Tuesday night at Chepauk. As a crowd of more than 33,000 marked the Tamil New Year, Chennai Super Kings rewrote the narrative with a commanding 32-run win over the Kolkata Knight Riders.
The victory was CSK’s first set of consecutive wins since April 2024, lifting them to eighth place in the standings. For KKR, the slump goes on; stuck at the bottom with only one point from five matches, they are now in a desperate situation, needing something extraordinary to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Sent in to bat first, CSK’s Sanju Samson efficiently countered their recent powerplay woes. He launched the innings with three straight boundaries and went on to compile a composed 48 off 32 balls.
The onslaught was maintained by Ayush Mhatre, who clinically took apart Cameron Green in a 21-run over that included two fours and two sixes. Although KKR’s mystery spinners induced a lull in the middle overs, Dewald Brevis and a late flourish from Sarfaraz Khan lifted the hosts to a competitive total of 192/5.
While the KKR bowlers did well to restrict CSK to under 200, the chase never found its wings. KKR’s gamble of promoting Sunil Narine to open failed, as Khaleel Ahmed and Anshul Kamboj clinicaly removed the top order inside the powerplay.
The middle overs were dominated by the left-arm spin pair of Noor Ahmad and Akeal Hosein, who effectively shut down the chase by giving away only 47 runs in their combined eight overs and claiming four crucial wickets, including those of Ajinkya Rahane, Cameron Green, and Rinku Singh.

They both communicate well, and they’ve got a very good understanding. I think today, Akeal was the one who went and told Noor about the length that he needed to bowl. Noor bowled a bit short in the first over, but once he found that in-between length, he was unplayable.

The night went from bad to worse for Ajinkya Rahane. In addition to the defeat, the KKR captain was clinicaly fined INR 12 lakh for a slow over-rate offense; their first of the season.
The silver lining for the visitors is the imminent arrival of Matheesha Pathirana, who has received his NOC to join the squad. KKR, who invested a record INR 18 crore in the Sri Lankan, desperately need his death-overs expertise to salvage a season where their bowling unit has appeared lightweight.

KKR’s season is on life support while CSK’s is clinicaly finding its second wind.
