George Russell ignited the 2026 Formula 1 season with a masterclass in Melbourne, leading teammate Kimi Antonelli to a commanding Mercedes 1-2 at the Australian Grand Prix. On a day that marked the debut of revolutionary technical regulations, the Silver Arrows proved they have mastered the new era, out-strategizing Ferrari and leaving the rest of the field in their wake.

While Russell secured his sixth career victory, the story of the day was the brilliance of a one-stop strategy that saw both Mercedes drivers hold off a charging Charles Leclerc, who finished third to complete the podium.

How Mercedes stole the lake

The race began with high drama before the lights even went out. Local favorite Oscar Piastri suffered a heart-breaking crash on his reconnaissance lap, ending his home race before it began. On the grid, pole-sitter Russell lost the lead to Leclerc in a frantic Turn 1, sparking a duel where the lead swapped seven times in the first nine laps.

The turning point arrived during two early Virtual Safety Car periods. Mercedes made a "brave" call to pit early for hard tires, while Ferrari chose to stay out. Russell and Antonelli then managed their rubber for a staggering 45 laps, neutralizing the tire advantage Ferrari hoped to gain later in the race.

New faces: Lindblad, Audi, and Cadillac

The 2026 opener provided a first look at the sport's expanded grid and fresh talent:

  • Arvid Lindblad: The Racing Bulls rookie delivered a standout performance, scoring points on his debut with a composed P8.

  • Audi & Cadillac: Gabriel Bortoleto secured P9 for Audi in their works debut, while Sergio Perez finished P16 for Cadillac, marking a milestone as the American team completed its first full race distance.

Verstappen’s rescue mission

After a qualifying disaster that saw him start from P20, Max Verstappen demonstrated why he remains a force to be reckoned with. The Red Bull driver carved through the field to finish P6, though he was unable to challenge the top five as he struggled with the balance of his car under the new aero regulations.

Melbourne milestones

  • Mercedes 1-2: Their first since the 2022 Brazilian Grand Prix.

  • Kimi Antonelli: Becomes one of the youngest podium finishers in F1 history on his debut.

  • Reliability issues: Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg and Cadillac’s Valtteri Bottas were among the six cars that failed to classify.

  • Fastest lap: Secured by George Russell, earning him a total of 26 points.

I’m feeling incredible. It was a hell of a fight at the beginning. It’s been a long time coming to have this car beneath us and we couldn’t start off in a better way.
