FIDE under pressure as safety concerns cloud Candidates 2026: Dismisses concerns as "unfounded"

Despite the cancellation of the 2026 WSOP Poker event in the same region and reports of power cuts from Hikaru Nakamura, FIDE remains "all-in," insisting the tournament will proceed on schedule.

The Mediterranean island of Cyprus has become the center of a high-stakes standoff in the chess world. While FIDE, the world chess governing body, remains resolute that the 2026 Candidates Tournament will proceed as planned, the withdrawal of Indian Grandmaster Koneru Humpy has exposed a deep rift between the organizers and the world’s elite players.

The controversy has intensified following the sudden cancellation of the WSOP Super Circuit Cyprus poker event (scheduled for April/May), with organizers citing "ongoing uncertainties in the region." This direct contradiction to FIDE’s "business as usual" stance has left fans and players questioning if the 64 squares are being placed in the middle of a geopolitical storm.

Safety over silverware

Koneru Humpy, one of the most respected figures in the game, stunned the community by pulling out of the Women’s Candidates. Citing the proximity of Cyprus to the volatile conflicts involving Iran, Israel, and the U.S., Humpy made it clear that "calculation" in chess doesn't stop at the board; it extends to life.

After deep reflection, I have taken the difficult decision to withdraw... No event, no matter how important, can come before personal safety and well-being. Despite the assurances provided, I do not feel fully secure under the current circumstances.

Ukrainian GM Anna Muzychuk has been named as her replacement, but the shadow of Humpy’s exit remains.

Cyprus Chess Federation hits back

Criton Tornaritis, President of the Cyprus Chess Federation (CCF), has not taken the criticism lightly. In a series of pointed remarks on X, he labeled Humpy’s move as "bad" and accused her of spreading "misinformation."

Tornaritis also sparred with U.S. star Hikaru Nakamura, who has been training in Cyprus for two months. When Nakamura expressed concern over "frequent and extended power cuts," Tornaritis dismissed the claims, questioning where the Grandmaster was reading such reports—despite Nakamura being physically present on the island

FIDE’s "all-in" strategy

Despite the WSOP poker organizers admitting that cancelling was the "most responsible decision" for the safety of players and staff, FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky maintains that the Candidates will go ahead. FIDE is leaning heavily on official assurances, even after a drone hit a UK RAF base on the island earlier this month.

Candidates 2026 controversy

  • Replacement: Anna Muzychuk takes Humpy’s spot in the Women’s Candidates.

  • Poker precedent: The WSOP Super Circuit was cancelled for the exact dates (April 25–May 11) surrounding the chess tournament’s orbit.

  • Nakamura’s camp: The U.S. Grandmaster has been on the island for nearly two months, giving him a unique "boots on the ground" perspective on the infrastructure.

  • Conflict factor: Cyprus’s geographic proximity to the Middle East remains the primary driver of anxiety for international athletes.

FIDE and the CCF are playing a defensive game, attempting to protect the tournament's reputation by dismissing player concerns as "unfounded." However, with major sporting neighbors like the WSOP folding their cards due to safety risks, the "calculation" mentioned by Tornaritis is looking increasingly subjective. For the players, the board isn't the only thing with black and white certainties; safety is either there, or it isn't.
