ICC Women's ODI World Cup 2025 surpasses, Men's World Cup prize pool; 239% increase from the previous edition
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced a record prize pool for the upcoming Women’s ODI World Cup, set to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka in 2025. The total prize money for the eight-team tournament will amount to $13.88 million, a figure that not only represents a massive increase but also surpasses the prize pool of the 2023 Men’s Cricket World Cup.
The new figures reveal a significant jump in rewards for participating teams. The champions of the 2025 tournament will take home a massive $4.48 million, which is a 239% increase from the $1.32 million awarded to the winners of the 2022 edition. The runner-up will receive $2.24 million, while the two losing semifinalists will each collect $1.12 million, a substantial rise from the $300,000 they received three years ago.
ICC Chairman Jay Shah stated that the record prize pool is a landmark moment for the sport. "This announcement marks a defining milestone in the journey of women’s cricket," he said. "This four-fold increase in prize money is a landmark moment and reflects our clear commitment to the sport’s long-term growth. Our message is simple: women cricketers must know they will be treated on par with men if they choose this sport professionally.”
The total prize money of $13.88 million is a 297% increase from the $3.5 million on offer in the last Women’s ODI World Cup held in New Zealand. Furthermore, this amount is notably higher than the $10 million prize pool for the 2023 men's tournament, where the winning Australian men's team earned $4 million. The announcement aligns with the ICC’s stated strategy to focus on the growth of the women’s game.
The substantial boost in financial rewards underscores a pivotal shift in the global recognition and investment in women's cricket. By providing financial parity, the ICC is reinforcing its commitment to elevating the professional status of women cricketers worldwide, ensuring they receive equitable compensation and recognition for their talent and dedication.
