The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has officially approved India's bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, naming Ahmedabad as the proposed host city. The decision, announced on Wednesday, aims to mark a step in the nation's ability to become a major destination for premier global sporting events.
The government has earmarked Ahmedabad as the "ideal" venue for the games, citing the city's impressive infrastructure. In an official release, the Centre highlighted Ahmedabad's "world class stadiums, cutting-edge training facilities, and a passionate sporting culture." The Narendra Modi Stadium, has previously hosted the cricket World Cup final.
The Cabinet's approval clears the path for the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to submit the formal bid ahead of the August 31 deadline. The government has also sanctioned the signing of the necessary Host Collaboration Agreement and has guaranteed financial grant-in-aid to the Gujarat government, should the bid be successful.
Hosting the games, which will feature athletes from 72 nations, the government predicts, is expected to provide a significant boost to the local and national economy and the influx of athletes, officials, tourists, and media is projected to benefit local businesses and generate substantial revenue. Furthermore, it is anticipated to create numerous job opportunities in sectors such as event management, logistics, broadcast, and communications.
Beyond the economic benefits, the government emphasized the social impact of hosting the prestigious event. An official statement noted that the games will "foster a strong sense of national pride and unity" and "inspire a new generation of athletes to enter into Sports as a career option." This bid marks India's first attempt to host the Commonwealth Games since the 2010 edition in New Delhi.
