The Indian boxing contingent experienced a mix of triumph and disappointment at the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool, England. While Nikhat Zareen and Jaismine Lamboria secured commanding wins, Lovlina Borgohain and Hitesh were knocked out in their respective opening bouts. The tournament serves as a crucial platform for the boxers, many of whom are making a return to the international stage.
Nikhat Zareen, a two-time World champion, made a triumphant comeback to international competition with a comprehensive 5-0 victory over USA's Jennifer Lozano in the 51kg division. Despite being out of action for months due to injury, the 29-year-old displayed no signs of rust. Her superior footwork and clean combinations from a long range left her opponent unable to land any significant punches. The unanimous decision in her favor sets up a highly anticipated pre-quarterfinal clash with Turkey's Busenaz Cakiroglu.
In a stark contrast, Lovlina Borgohain's return ended in a surprising early exit. The Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist was stunned by Turkey's Busra Isildar, losing by a unanimous 0-5 decision. Lovlina, who received a bye in the first round, struggled against Isildar's powerful and aggressive style. The Turkish boxer's ability to close the distance and land cleaner punches ultimately proved to be too much for the Indian, who seemed to lack her usual rhythm and assertiveness.
The men's competition also had its share of mixed results. Hitesh (70kg), despite a superb effort, was ousted by Finn Robert Bos with a 1-4 verdict. A powerful right from Bos in the final round grounded Hitesh, giving the Dutchman a decisive advantage. Hitesh's defeat was a tough one, as the bout was much closer than the final score suggests.
On Friday, however, two other Indian boxers secured impressive victories. Jaismine Lamboria (57kg) defeated Ukraine's Daria-Olha Hutarina with a unanimous 5-0 decision, while Asian Games bronze medallist Narender Berwal (90+kg) beat Ireland's Martin McDonagh 4-1. These wins ensured that India's campaign remains on track, with several boxers still in contention for a medal.
