The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has fully reinstated its partnership with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), ending an 11-month suspension of funding. The decision comes as a major relief for Indian athletes as they intensify their preparations for the 2026 Asian Games and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. The restored partnership, which includes the vital Olympic Solidarity programmes, will provide crucial financial and developmental support for Indian sports.
The suspension was initially imposed in October 2024 due to "ongoing internal disputes and governance issues" within the IOA's executive council. The conflict, which created significant uncertainty, was largely fueled by disagreements over the appointment of Raghuram Iyer as the IOA's Chief Executive Officer. At the time, IOC Director James Macleod had cited these issues as the reason for suspending Olympic Solidarity payments, though direct athlete scholarships were maintained.
Wednesday's announcement by the IOC signals a significant turnaround in the governance of Indian sport. In a letter to IOA President P.T. Usha, the IOC commended the "positive measures taken by the IOA and the Government of India to strengthen the sporting ecosystem." The IOC specifically highlighted two key reforms: the formal appointment of Raghuram Iyer as CEO and the Government's adoption of the National Sports Governance Act. Both measures were praised as "pivotal" steps toward building a stronger foundation for sport in the country.
With the Olympic Solidarity programmes back in place, Indian athletes are the direct beneficiaries. The renewed support will provide much-needed funding for training, preparation, and participation in major international competitions, helping them to realize their Olympic dreams. The IOA has reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the IOC to ensure sustained support for athletes across all disciplines.
IOA President P.T. Usha celebrated the reinstatement as a landmark moment. "This reflects our shared commitment from the IOA to the Government of India, under the new and transformative sports legislation to uphold the highest standards of governance in sport," Usha said. "Together, we are shaping a strong and promising future for India’s athletes. This renewed partnership with the IOC will play a vital role in helping our athletes realise their Olympic aspirations. We sincerely thank the IOC for its continued trust, support, and guidance.”
