The India U-17 women’s national team achieved a historic qualification for the AFC U-17 Women’s Asian Cup 2026, defeating Uzbekistan 2-1 in a dramatic match on Friday. Playing at the Dolen Omurzakov Stadium, the Young Tigresses secured their spot in the continental tournament for the first time on merit.
India, who only needed a draw to advance, found themselves trailing 0-1 at halftime. Uzbekistan took the lead in the 38th minute when Shakhzoda Alikhonova’s volley from outside the box struck the underside of the crossbar and went in, putting India's qualification hopes in jeopardy.
The match turned on a crucial first-half substitution by head coach Joakim Alexandersson, who brought on Thandamoni Baskey for Bonifilia Shullai in the 40th minute. Baskey proved to be the difference-maker, equalizing in the 55th minute. She latched onto an aerial through ball, and after being initially thwarted by a defender, showed presence of mind to steal the ball back, cut inside, and score at the near post.
Baskey was instrumental again in the 66th minute, setting up the winning goal for Anushka Kumari. After a clever turn, Kumari played the ball to Baskey, who returned it with a first-touch pass. Kumari then calmly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper to complete the 2-1 turnaround. The Indian defense held firm in the closing stages to secure the victory.
The win means India finishes at the top of Group G with six points, booking their ticket to the tournament in China. While the team last featured in the championship in 2005, that was an 11-team event with direct participation. This marks the first time India has successfully advanced through the qualification system. The U-17s now join the senior and U-20 women’s teams in qualifying for their respective AFC Asian Cup campaigns.
