The Indian Premier League (IPL) continues to solidify its position as a financial juggernaut, with its media rights deals alone generating a minimum of ₹12,000 crore per season, as confirmed by recent reports. This figure forms the backbone of the league’s revenue, which is further amplified by sponsorships, advertising, and matchday earnings, propelling the IPL toward unprecedented commercial success.
For the 2023–2027 cycle, the IPL’s combined media rights were sold for ₹48,390 crore (US$6.2 billion) to Disney Star, Viacom18 (now JioStar) translating to ~₹9,678 crore per season for broadcasting and digital rights. However, additional clauses likely push the effective annual media revenue beyond ₹12,000 crore, with the BCCI retaining a significant share for operational costs.
TV rights (Star Sports): ₹3,500 crore annually.
Digital rights (JioStar): ₹3,000 crore annually.
International rights: Estimated to contribute ₹1,500–2,000 crore yearly.
The 2025 season is projected to set records:
Advertising revenue: ₹4,500 crore (US$540 million) from TV and digital platforms, a 50% YoY jump, driven by JioStar’s unified strategy post its merger with Disney+ Hotstar.
Sponsorship deals: Top partners like Kalyan Jewellers (₹100 crore), SG Cricket (₹80 crore), and PepsiCo (₹70 crore) add ₹800–1,000 crore annually.
Ad rates:
TV: Up to ₹18 lakh per 10-second slot (SD/HD).
Digital: ₹8.5 lakh per 10 seconds on Connected TV (CTV), with mobile ads at ₹250 cost per impression.
Central revenue share: Teams receive 45% of media rights income (₹5,400 crore divided among 10 franchises), translating to ₹540 crore per team annually.
Local revenue: Matchday earnings (tickets, merchandise) and team-specific sponsorships contribute 10–15% of total income.
Player costs: Top teams like Mumbai Indians spend ₹95 crore annually on salaries.
With its multi-layered revenue model, the IPL is on track to surpass ₹10,000 crore in total annual revenue by 2025, reinforcing its status as the world’s second-most valuable sports league per match after the NFL.
