In a genuine physical contest that drove both competitors to their limits, defending champion Jack Draper secured a monumental 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(5) victory over Novak Djokovic on Wednesday. The win keeps Draper’s hopes of a repeat title alive and denies the 38-year-old Serbian superstar his first Indian Wells quarterfinal appearance since 2016.

The match, lasting two hours and 35 minutes, was a grueling war of attrition. For Draper, currently ranked 14th and playing just his second ATP event after an eight-month injury layoff, the victory marks a career-defining moment in his return to the world's elite.

26-shot turning point

The contest pivoted on an exhilarating 26-shot rally in the opening game of the deciding set. While Djokovic won the point, featuring a spectacular array of lobs, drop shots, and smashes, with the effort appearing to empty his tank.

Draper capitalized immediately, breaking the Djokovic serve in the following game. Though the Briton faltered while serving for the match at 5-4, he displayed remarkable mental fortitude to regroup and clinch the deciding-set tie-break.

"Mind-blowing" victory

In his post-match reflections, a visibly exhausted Draper paid tribute to the man he has idolized since childhood, while acknowledging the significance of the win for his own season.

To beat Novak is something that is mind-blowing. I've watched him since I was a kid, idolising him. Unbelievable respect for the player that he is... It's something I will probably look back on in a few months and think this is a real big moment for me.

Djokovic was equally gracious in defeat, citing the physical toll of the deciding set's opening exchanges:

It cost me a break after. It was great winning that point in that game, but I just ran completely out of gas. It was so close, so close. I mean, just unfortunate few mistakes from my side. He's playing at a great level... overall, a great player, great guy.

Back-to-back challenges

Draper now faces a significant test of his physical recovery. For the first time since his return from an arm injury, he will be required to play on back-to-back days. Standing between him and the semifinals is the 11th-seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev, who leads the tour in wins this season.
