Jannik Sinner’s march toward the "Sunshine Double" continues to shatter the record books. On Tuesday at Hard Rock Stadium, the World No. 2 survived a significant second-set scare from American hopeful Alex Michelsen, winning 7-5, 7-6(4). The victory not only booked his spot in the Miami Open quarter-finals but extended his unprecedented run of consecutive sets won at the ATP Masters 1000 level to a staggering 28.

Trailing 2-5 in the second set and facing the end of a streak that dates back to the Paris Masters in 2025, Sinner rediscovered his range. He broke back as the afternoon sun complicated Michelsen's service motion and clinicaly closed out the tie-break, moving to 3-0 in their head-to-head series.

New standard for dominance

Sinner’s 28-set streak officially moves him clear of the previous record held by Novak Djokovic (24). Having swept both Paris 2025 and Indian Wells 2026 without dropping a set, the Italian is now just three wins away from becoming the first man since Roger Federer in 2017 to complete the Indian Wells-Miami back-to-back double.

Sinner on the "scenic" escape

Despite the record-breaking numbers, Sinner remained critical of his baseline rhythm, crediting his serve for navigating the high-pressure moments.

I didn’t feel my best tennis today, so I tried to find a way through. I feel like the serve helped me quite a lot today, especially in important moments and in the tie-break. Tomorrow is a day off, which helps me, and I will try to find a good rhythm in the practice session. Then we’ll see how things go.

Miami masterclass

  • American dominance: Sinner has now won 28 consecutive matches against American opponents, a streak reaching back to late 2023.

  • Exclusive club: He is only the third man in history (after Yannick Noah and Stefan Edberg) to reach the quarter-finals in each of his first five appearances at the Miami Open.

  • Masters milestone: This victory marks Sinner’s 20th career Masters 1000 quarter-final in fewer than 40 main-draw appearances.

  • Draw opens: With World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz recently upset by Sebastian Korda, Sinner is structurally the heavy favorite to claim the title.

  • Next opponent: Sinner will face 19th seed Frances Tiafoe in the quarter-finals on Thursday.

While Sinner admitted to not playing his "best tennis," his ability to dismantle a 2-5 deficit against a home favorite speaks to a mental fortitude that is currently unmatched on the ATP Tour. As the set streak grows to 28, the question is no longer just if Sinner will win, but if anyone can even take a set off him before he lifts the trophy.
