Karnataka and Maharashtra edge to edge at the end of Day 1

Pune: The 44th Glenmark Junior National Aquatic Championship started of with the 400 m Freestyle Boys Group I. This year all the events above 400m are decided on the basis of time trials. Kushagra Rawat who trains at the SAI Glenmark TIDM programme in Delhi and represents Delhi won the gold with a time of 04:07.75. Rahul M of Karnataka won silver with a time of 4:12.26 while Vedant Khandeparkar of Maharashtra claimed bronze with a time of 4:17.09

The race of the evening was the 200 m Breaststroke Boys Group II. Swadesh Mondal who is at the lower end of the age group not only showcased his superiority in a wonderfully controlled and paced performance to win the gold with a new meet record of 2:28.87. It has been a wonderful journey for Swadesh who had clocked 2:34.02 in April at the Thailand open. It would not be wrong to suggest he is the most improved swimmer in India over the past 2 years. His teammate from SGTIDM Dekhi Bhargav Phukan who races for Assam won silver with a time of 2:36.53 while Litheesh C of Karnataka claimed bronze with a time of 2:36.90

Saloni Dalal a fantastic talent from Karnataka broke the record for the 200 m Breaststroke Girls Group I twice in a day. In the heats she clocked 2:44.48 in the heats which she beatin the evening to win gold by clocking a time of 2:43.01 which incidentally is also the best time clocked by an Indian ever in this event.Harshita J won the silver with a time of 2:49.09 while Kalyani Saxena of Gujarat won bronze with a time of 2:51.88

The 200 m Freestyle Girls Group I started off proceedings in the afternoon session. Glenmark Aquatic Foundation swimmer Rayna Saldanha and Mayuri Lingaraj who had both won th3 Individual championships in the Girls Group II category in 2015 and 2016 faced off in a truly exciting race.  Rayna led from start to finish to win the gold with a time of 2:11.06 while Annie Jain who trains at the SAI Glenmark TIDM program in Delhi and races for Madhya Pradesh caused a flutter by beating Mayuri Lingaraj for the Silver with a time of 2:14.05. Mayuri from Karnataka won the bronze with a time of 2:14.09

Srihari Nataraj from Karnataka emulated the effort of Saloni Dalal by breaking the 50 m Backstroke  Boys Group I by breaking the national record twice Once in the heats with a time of 26.96 and breaking it again with a time of 26.90 in the finals. Xavier Dsouza from Goa the previous record holder who trains at the Glenmark Aquatic Foundation won the silver with a time of 27.45 while Soumyajit Saha of Bengal claimed bronze with a time of 28.42

Kenisha Gupta of Maharashtra led the 200 m Breaststroke Girls Group II from start to finish and created a new National record with a time of 2:51.94, She was closely followed by SFI’s Adithi Balaji who achieved a better meet record of 2:52.26 while Rachana S Rao of Karnataka won the bronze medal with a time of 2:52.93

Dhanush S of Tamil Nadu swam into the record books with a superlative performance in the 200 m Breaststroke Boys Group I. Dhanush set a new meet record of 2:22.44 and clearly established his supremacy over the pack. Lohit M of Andhra Pradesh won silver with 2:26.26 while Mangasana Meitei of SSCB won bronze with a time of 2:29.00
Aryan Nehra a vastly improved swimmer from Gujarat had a fantastic swim with the gold in the 400 m Freestyle in Boys Group II catefory. Aryan won gold with a time of 4:21.41 followed by Madhya Pradesh’s Parampadam Birthare who clocked 4:22.91. The bronze was secured by Leonard V of Tamil Nadu with a time of 4:25.22

Abhishikta P.M. of tamilnadu broke the local crowd’s hearts as she swam a fantastic final 25 to edge past Glenmark Aquatic Foundation swimmer Rayna Saldanha to win the 800 m Freestyle Girls Group I with a time of 9:36.15. Rayna who led for most of the race clocked 9:36.35 securing silver while Prachi Tokas of Delhi won bronze with a time of 9:48.03.

The Maharashtra team in the 4 X 100m Freestyle Relay Boys Group I swam into the record books with a spelindid performance to clinch gold. The team represented by Aaron Fernandes, Mihir Amber, Aniket Chawan and Neel Roy swam the race with a time of 3:37.88. Karnataka won silver with a time of 3:38.78 while Bengal picked the bronze with a time of 3:46.47

The 200 m Freestyle for Girls Group II saw Khushi Dinesh from Karnataka leading the race from start to finish but she was challenged in the last 25m wonderfully by Assam swimmer Aastha Chaudhary who trains at SAI Glenmark TIDM Programme. Khushi clocked 2:12.83 to win the gold while Aastha clocked 2:13.76. Aakansha Shah of Maharashtra won bronze with a time of 2:17.16

Jaahnavi R of Tamil Nadu swum an intense face paced race to win the 50 m Backstroke Girls Group I with a time of 31.75. Jhanati Rajesh of Karnataka won silver with a time of 32.37 while Khushi Jain of Haryana won bronze with a time of 32.51

Another swimmer from the SAI Glenmark TIDM programme in Delhi Tanisha Malviya representing Delhi won the gold in the  50 m Backstroke Girls Group II wth a time of 32.05. She was followed of Suvana C of Karnataka won silver with a time of 32.31 while Jahanavi Goli got Telengana on the medal board winning bronze with a time of 32.33
Mihir Ambre from Maharashtra kept his nose in front as he fought a late challenge mounted by team mate Neel Roy as they won   the gold and silver for Maharashra with times of 25.88 and 26.27 respectively in 50 m Butterfly Boys Group I. Adhithya D of Tamil  won bronze with a time of 26.28.

The 50 m Butterfly event in Boys Group II saw a fast paced race with Tanish George M of Karnataka emerging victorious with a time of 26.68. Vikkas P and Prasidha K of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka won the silver and bronze with a time of 26.99 and 27.60 respectively.

The 50 m Butterfly Girls Group I saw Aarya Rajguru of Maharashtra swimming a supremely confident race to win gold with a time of 29.56s. Mayuri Lingaraj of Karnataka and Sadhuvi Dhruri won their second medals of the day a silver and bronze with times of 29.86 and 29.93 respectively

Kenisha Gupta of Maharashtra swum to her second gold of day in the 50 m Butterfly in the Girls Group II clocking 30.17. She was followed by Kerala swimmer Liyana Umar who clocked 30.48.  Uttara Gogoi who swims at the SGTIDM programme won bronze with a time of 30.80
The 4*100 m Freestyle  Boys Group II saw Karnataka winning with a time of 3:52.22 while Tamil Nadu won silver with a time of 3:53.21 while Maharashtra claimed bronze with a time of 3:54.09.

Khusi Dinesh of Karnataka won the last race on a long day, the 1500f m Freestyle Girls Group II to take Karnataka top of the medal tally. Khushi won the race clocking 18:28.09 while her teammate Pujita G Murty won silver with 18:58.06 while Akansha shah added a bronze to Maharashtra’s tally with a time of 19:08.78

Speaking about the performance of his swimmers Head Coach of the SGTIDM programme Mr. Partha Pratim Majumder said “Very happy with performance but not making ourselves satisfied until we get us in world swimming map”
