While crores across India were glued to theT20 World Cup final between India and New Zealand on March 8, 2026, a horrific tragedy unfolded in Jakkopur village, Vaishali district, Bihar. Kundan Kumar, a 17-year-old speech-impaired teenager, was allegedly beaten to death following a fatal misunderstanding over a "wrong cheer" during the match.
The tragedy occurred on Sunday evening as a group of local youths gathered to watch the final on a mobile phone. When India lost its first wicket, Kundan; the youngest of four siblings and a resident of Ward No. 18, reacted with a scream. His neighbor, identified by police as Kisan Kumar (17), allegedly misinterpreted the sound as a celebration of the Indian wicket falling.
What began as a verbal dispute escalated into a physical assault. According to Kundan’s mother, the assault was brutal:
On March 8, Kundan went out of the house for some work... Some boys from the village were watching the match on a cellphone. My son also started watching there. When India’s first wicket fell, Kundan screamed. They thought he was happy about the wicket falling. The youths beat him up and smashed his head.

Due to his critical condition, he was progressively referred to the Hajipur Sadar Hospital and finally to the Patna Medical College and Hospital. Tragically, Kundan succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Monday morning, March 9, while in transit to Patna.
Mahnar SDPO provided the police's initial assessment of the physical struggle:
The incident of assault took place in a mutual dispute between two youths over watching cricket. During the altercation, Kundan fell on a stone after being pushed, which caused him serious injuries. He was being taken to the PMCH for treatment but succumbed to his injuries on the way.
