The roof nearly blew off the Emirates Stadium on Saturday as the Premier League witnessed a moment of pure, historical magic. Arsenal moved one step closer to their first title in 22 years with a 2-0 victory over a resilient Everton, but the headlines belong to one name: Max Dowman.

At just 16 years and 73 days old, the academy graduate became the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history, capping a solo run that felt like it lasted a lifetime to seal three pivotal points. With second-placed Manchester City drawing with West Ham later in the day, the Gunners now sit nine points clear at the summit, albeit having played one game more.

Substitutes’ spark

For 80 minutes, David Moyes’ Everton provided a colossal test. Since his return to the club in January 2025, Moyes has transformed the Toffees into a defensive fortress, and for much of the match, it seemed Arsenal’s attack had stalled.

However, Mikel Arteta’s summer investment in depth paid dividends. Both goals were scored and assisted by substitutes, taking Arsenal's tally to 11 goals from the bench this season; the highest in the league.

  1. Breakthrough (82nd Minute): After Max Dowman's cross caused chaos, Jordan Pickford’s touch deflected off Piero Hincapié. The ball broke perfectly for Viktor Gyokeres, who tapped into an empty net to break the deadlock.

  2. Clincher (90+4 Minute): With Pickford forward for an Everton corner, Arsenal cleared to Dowman. The teenager produced a breathtaking feint that left Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall slumped on the turf before motoring 60 yards and rolling the ball home.

Arteta on the "Dowman moment"

A jubilant Mikel Arteta described the closing seconds of the match as one of the best moments he has experienced at the Emirates.

It felt like 45 seconds as Max ran through. It was building up and building up. You see there’s no goalie. It’s going to happen, it's going to happen. It was incredible. What a moment. For many years, I think people who were in the stadium today will say 'I was in the Emirates that day when that kid at 16 scored a goal at such an important stage of the season

On Dowman's temperament, Arteta added:

It's so organic for him, he doesn't feel the pressure. To do that at that age, in this context, with the expectations to win the game, it's just not normal.

Everton’s Resilience and Injury Woes

Everton were far from passive observers. Iliman Ndiaye shimmered with menace, forcing Jurriën Timber off with an injury in the 38th minute. The Toffees were denied an opener only by an acrobatic, unbelievable block from Riccardo Calafiori to stop Dwight McNeil.

Moyes, missing key defenders James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite, was left to rue missed opportunities:

Organisation. Physical fight. We made it difficult, but the clinical nature of their bench was the difference.

Max Dowman:

  • Youngest Premier League scorer: 16 years, 73 days (surpassing James Vaughan).

  • Arsenal records: Youngest player to feature in the Champions League and FA Cup for the club.

  • Future: Dowman recently signed a pre-contract agreement to turn professional when he turns 17 on December 31.

Title destination

Arsenal are now in the driving seat with seven games remaining. While the pressure of a title race often cripples the nerves, the "relentless desire" Arteta noted in his squad, suggests this year might finally be different.

The Gunners' focus now shifts to a monumental week, culminating in the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City next Sunday.
