Every successful run eventually concludes, including a winning streak in video games. On a high-energy Tuesday night at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Stadium, the Rajasthan Royals inflicted the Punjab Kings’ first loss of the IPL 2026 season.
Pursuing a challenging target of 223, the Royals seemed to falter during the middle overs against Yuzvendra Chahal’s spin. Yet, a composed, unbeaten 77-run stand between South African signing Donovan Ferreira and the hard-hitting Shubham Dubey turned the match around. RR overhauled the total with four balls remaining, climbing to third place on the table and demonstrating that Punjab’s aura of being unchaseable does have its limits.
Rajasthan Royals acquired Donovan Ferreira from Delhi Capitals in exchange for Nitish Rana during the transfer window. On Tuesday, that investment bore fruit. Walking in at 123/3 with the asking rate climbing, Ferreira treated the chase with the calm of a kid playing with a toy truck.
I kept on telling the guys, 'we need to be positive, it's not that hard to get that score. We need to keep showing intent, we mustn't be predictable and swing every ball. So let's be calculative and play good cricket shots.

Finish: Ferreira (52*) and Shubham Dubey (an unbeaten 31 off 12 balls) dismantled the pace attack of Arshdeep Singh and Lockie Ferguson in the last three overs.
Math: RR required 72 runs from the last six overs, and they chased them down by attacking the pace bowlers once the spinners had completed their spells.
The pursuit gained momentum thanks to 15-year-old prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who smashed five sixes in a 16-ball 43, turning Arshdeep Singh’s opening over into little more than a warm-up.
After the early fireworks from the Boy Wonder, Yashasvi Jaiswal steadied the PowerPlay with a calm 51 off 27 balls. Their 84-run opening stand meant that even a brief stutter in the middle overs, triggered by Yuzvendra Chahal dismissing both Jaiswal and Parag, was not enough to throw the chase off course.
Earlier in the evening, Marcus Stoinis looked poised to take the match beyond the opposition’s grasp. The Australian hammered an unbeaten 62 from just 22 deliveries, plundering 24 runs off Brijesh Sharma’s final over.
Prabhsimran Singh (59 off 44) held the innings together, but the PBKS middle order failed to build momentum against the disciplined pace of Jofra Archer (150.1kph) and Nandre Burger. A stretch of 18 consecutive balls without a boundary in the middle overs meant that even Stoinis’ late hitting could not clinch a seventh victory.
First loss: After 25 days of dominance, PBKS tasted defeat in IPL 2026.
'Toy truck mindset: Ferreira attributed his match-winning calm to a childhood lack of pressure.
Powerplay peak: RR’s 84/1 was the highest PowerPlay score of the night, surpassing Punjab’s effort on the same surface.
Tactical bench: RR left out both Shimron Hetmyer and Ravi Bishnoi, a gamble that paid off thanks to the middle-order depth of Dubey and Ferreira.
I'm really pleased that I'm hitting the ball well. Shubham came in and did well too. And Jaiswal and them are always setting it up in the first couple of overs. But it's important that when it's your day you need to step up and win the match for the team.

Punjab Kings have relied on their invincible top order all season, but Rajasthan Royals exposed their death-bowling vulnerabilities. By rotating the responsibility away from just Jaiswal and Sooryavanshi, the Royals pivoted to their middle-order finishers. For PBKS, the quiet middle overs proved to be the difference between 222 and a truly unchaseable 240.
