The AI world is evolving rapidly, making everyday tasks easier than ever. Now, even payments can happen with just a tap on the screen. In one such advancement, users will soon be able to make payments directly through ChatGPT. ChatGPT’s parent company, OpenAI, has partnered with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and Razorpay to enable in-app UPI payments, bringing seamless, agent-powered transactions to your fingertips.
The new initiative, now in its pilot stage, aims to incorporate Agentic Payment into ChatGPT, allowing the chatbot to handle payments for users without leaving the app. The AI startup indicates that users are already utilizing ChatGPT to search for products and services, assess options, compare costs, and organize their buying decisions.
In the illustration provided by the firms, a user can ask ChatGPT something like: “Help me order ingredients for a Thai-style vegetable curry for 4 people from BigBasket.”
ChatGPT will: Search BigBasket’s catalog, suggest relevant product options and ask for user confirmation.
Once confirmed, ChatGPT will: Place the order using Razorpay’s UPI payments system.
Users will have: Full control over the process, real-time order tracking
and the ability to instantly cancel or revoke the order if needed.
Axis Bank and Airtel Payments Bank are participating as banking partners in the pilot project. Concurrently, Bigbasket, a quick commerce platform owned by the Tata group, is one of the initial platforms enabling customers to shop using the new AI-driven experience on ChatGPT.
As part of the deal, Razorpay, NPCI, and OpenAI will explore AI-driven payment solutions, focusing on creating a more personalized and secure UPI shopping experience. They also indicated that, in the future, AI agents may be equipped with payment credentials to autonomously complete transactions while keeping user safety, security, and control at the core.
