Elon Musk’s xAI, the company behind Grok, has launched Grokipedia, an AI-powered online encyclopedia designed to take on what Musk calls a “woke” Wikipedia. The billionaire says the platform will be “a massive improvement over Wikipedia” and reflects xAI’s broader goal of helping humanity better understand the universe.
Musk previously stated on his social media platform X that an AI-generated encyclopedia is “extremely crucial for civilization,” as it would be free from human authors and avoid political or ideological bias.
On Grokipedia, users can browse AI-verified articles with timestamps showing the latest updates. Unlike Wikipedia, direct edits aren’t allowed, but users can suggest changes or flag errors. Some content is still adapted from Wikipedia under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 License. Grokipedia can currently be accessed only from a web browser.
Currently, Grokipedia sources much of its content from Wikipedia, though Elon Musk plans to make it independent by the end of the year. The AI is open source, allowing free access for everyone. At present, Grokipedia has 885,279 articles, a fraction of Wikipedia’s over 7 million, but this number is expected to grow.
Users have highlighted clear differences between Grokipedia and Wikipedia entries on Elon Musk. While Wikipedia emphasizes controversies, criticisms, and misinformation linked to him, Grokipedia portrays him as a figure shaping technological and societal debates, citing general sources like Forbes rather than specific articles or posts.
