Google has launched a new feature for its AI assistant Gemini, enabling users to import chats and personal data from other chatbots. This initiative is part of a broader effort by tech giants to draw more users in a highly competitive AI landscape.
Google has unveiled new “switching tools” for its Gemini AI assistant, aimed at helping users migrate their existing chatbot data instead of starting from scratch. These tools make it easier to bring over a variety of information, including personal details, user preferences, and even entire chat histories. Central to this feature are what Google calls “memories”—key pieces of information such as interests, relationships, and personal context—that can now be seamlessly imported into Gemini.
How it works:
Gemini suggests a prompt for users to enter into their current chatbot.
The chatbot generates a response containing the relevant data.
Users copy and paste this response into Gemini, allowing it to learn about their preferences and personal context.
“Once you import these memories, Gemini will understand the same key facts you’ve shared with other apps, like your interests, your sibling’s name, or where you grew up,” the company says. “Instead of starting over from scratch, you can quickly get Gemini up to speed on what matters most to you.”
Users can import full chat histories by uploading zip files, letting Gemini continue conversations seamlessly. Imported chats are searchable, and Gemini now has over 750 million monthly active users, according to Alphabet.
The company aims to address a major hurdle in switching platforms by letting users carry their data along. Previously, users had to rebuild their preferences and context from scratch, but now their digital history can move with them.
This feature also appears to be part of a broader effort to make it easier for users to adopt Gemini while providing a familiar experience in the expanding AI landscape.
