Google DeepMind, in partnership with the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) under NITI Aayog, has launched a live pilot of ATL Saathi, a Gemini-powered web application built to give teachers at Atal Tinkering Labs (ATL) across India round-the-clock planning and training support.

Atal Tinkering Labs currently provide access to technologies such as 3D printing, IoT, and robotics for more than 1.1 crore students across the country, and the new tool is designed to shift the initiative's focus from simply providing lab infrastructure toward measurable outcomes such as faster innovation and improved learning.

The launch follows Google DeepMind's announcement at the AI Impact Summit in February 2026, where it committed to integrating Gemini into teacher workflows and developing AI tools aligned with India's school curriculum. Developed with the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), ATL Saathi is designed to support teachers at Atal Tinkering Labs.

The Gemini-powered ATL Saathi is designed to help teachers with lesson planning, curriculum delivery and hands-on classroom projects. The AI assistant offers training resources, project-generation tools and multilingual support to streamline teaching at Atal Tinkering Labs.

Key features include:

  • AI-generated summaries, infographics, video explainers and quizzes across 12 ATL curriculum modules via NotebookLM.

  • Curriculum-aligned project ideas with step-by-step assembly instructions, wiring diagrams and safety guidance.

  • Support for interactions in eight Indian languages, with additional languages planned.

ATL Saathi is powered by Google's Gemini models, with Gemini 3.5 Flash handling project generation and instructional content. The pilot will begin in 100 schools across India, with Google evaluating its impact on teacher workload and classroom support.

The launch expands Google's education initiatives in India, including Google for Education and Google Classroom. It also reflects a broader trend of AI companies positioning generative AI as a tool to assist teachers with planning and administration rather than replace them.
