The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has reportedly found X's response to its advisory on the spread of obscene and explicit content on its platform to be inadequate. The advisory had raised concerns about the misuse of X’s AI chatbot, Grok, with users allegedly creating inappropriate and sexualized images of women and minors. X was given an extended deadline until Wednesday at 5 PM to submit a comprehensive Action Taken Report.
MeitY has stated that Grok and other xAI services have been misused to generate and spread harmful, non-consensual images that infringe on the dignity and privacy of women. The ministry has instructed X to swiftly remove all illegal content from its platform.
X has also replied to the ministry, but the ministry found the response lacking, indicating that X's reply failed to address actions and preventive measures. According to a PTI report, the ministry has requested X to present concrete proof of the steps the company is taking to prevent a recurrence of the recent scandal.
In a related statement, X clarified that anyone using or prompting Grok to generate illegal content will face the same consequences as those directly uploading such material. On January 2, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) directed X to promptly remove all vulgar, obscene, and unlawful content, particularly that which is generated through Grok.
The government has asked X to share technical details of its escalation protocols and moderation systems.
X is required to ensure that its systems comply with India's IT rules and content standards.
Officials emphasized that the government is no longer satisfied with generic assurances from the company.
If the issue is not addressed swiftly, it risks becoming a focal point for widespread criticism, as numerous countries have already voiced concerns over emerging inappropriate trends. It will be interesting to see how Elon Musk responds to the Indian government's latest requests.
