India has successfully developed its first indigenous MRI machine, which is set to be installed at AIIMS Delhi by October 2025 for clinical trials. This significant advancement aims to reduce the country's reliance on imported medical devices, which currently accounts for 80-85% of such equipment in use.
The MRI machine, a 1.5 Tesla scanner, represents a major step towards self-reliance in medical technology under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. This development is expected to enhance access to MRI services across India, making them more affordable.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between AIIMS and the Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering and Research (SAMEER), which will oversee the installation and clinical validation of the MRI system.
The introduction of this indigenous MRI machine is anticipated to significantly lower the costs associated with MRI scanning, thereby improving public access to essential diagnostic services. Dr. M Srinivas, Director of AIIMS Delhi, emphasized that a majority of critical care equipment in India is imported. He expressed confidence that with local expertise, India can develop high-quality medical devices that meet international standards.
Following the installation of the MRI machine, there are plans to further develop integrated solutions that combine MRI capabilities with other treatment technologies, such as linear accelerators for cancer treatment.
