Post offices across India will begin accepting UPI payments at their service counters starting August 2025. This initiative, spearheaded by the Department of Posts, is set to revolutionize the customer experience for millions of Indians who rely on postal services for a wide range of transactions, from mail bookings to savings deposits.
The rollout is part of the Department of Posts’ ambitious IT 2.0 upgrade, which introduces a new application capable of generating dynamic QR codes for every transaction. Unlike static QR codes, which were previously piloted but discontinued due to technical issues and customer complaints, dynamic QR codes are generated in real-time. This ensures greater security, reliability, and ease of use for customers making payments at the counter.
The new system has already been successfully piloted in Karnataka, with the Mysore and Bagalkot head offices, along with several branch offices, implementing QR-based booking of mail products. The success of these pilots has paved the way for a nationwide rollout, which is expected to be completed by August 2025.
Until now, post offices in India were unable to accept digital payments because their systems were not integrated with the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). This often forced customers to rely on cash or make inconvenient trips to nearby ATMs. The new IT infrastructure will allow post office counters to instantly generate a unique QR code for each transaction, making digital payments as simple as scanning and paying through any UPI-enabled app.
This initiative is part of the government’s broader push to promote a cashless economy and enhance digital inclusion. By enabling UPI payments at over 150,000 post offices nationwide, the Department of Posts is bridging the digital divide and supporting the vision of a Digital India.
