On Tuesday, Instagram, a social media platform owned by Meta, reportedly faced technical difficulties. According to Downdetector, a website that tracks outages, more than 11,000 users reported problems with the platform. By 10:37 PM EST, approximately 11,469 users had reported an outage on Instagram. Most of the complaints were related to direct messaging, with users unable to send or receive messages.
Downdetector showed that most users faced issues with the Instagram app, while others reported problems with server connections and posting. Outages were reported in cities including Los Angeles, Phoenix, Chicago, Washington, and New York. Based on Downdetector's information, most grievances were about the app's service interruptions. Approximately 68% of users experienced difficulties with the app, 19% encountered server connection issues, and 7% of the complaints were about content publishing and posting.
One user said, “instagram down I REPEAT INSTAGRAM DOWN.” Another wrote, “are instagram dms down or... am i cooked.” A third asked, “is instagram down rn??? dms arent working for me is it just me.” On Downdetector, many echoed similar frustrations: “are the messages delayed to show???” and “also just dms not working for me…” Some were cut off mid-conversation. “Instagram went down in the middle of 3 different conversations,” one said. Others lamented being unable to reply: “can't reply to messages.”
Meanwhile, some online speculated the outage was linked to the US-Iran conflict, with one claiming, “THIS IS WHY INSTAGRAM IS DOWN I KNEW IT.” These claims remain unverified, and Instagram has not released an official explanation.
As users await clarity, many are turning to Instagram’s posts on X, asking for a fix. “My Instagram is acting up saying failed to load earlier messages but nothing is wrong with my internet please fix yalls app,” one person said.
