Binge-watching Reels has become part of our daily scroll, whether it’s killing time or dodging boredom. But as soon as your internet cuts out, the endless feed freezes. That might soon change. According to a new leak, Instagram is testing a feature that could let users watch Reels offline, potentially transforming how we enjoy the platform while on the move.
How the Feature Is Expected to Work
The rumoured offline Reels feature could automatically save videos for later viewing, even without an internet connection. Tipster Alessandro Paluzzi shared screenshots and details suggesting a seamless background download system. Instead of manually saving videos, the app could “pre-load” Reels so they’re ready to watch anytime.
Key features spotted so far:
Manage offline downloads: A new option in the Reels menu with a toggle for automatic downloads.
Wi-Fi-only option: To prevent mobile data usage.
Storage control: Users may limit saved videos to 10, 30, or 50 Reels at a time.
Playback options: Offline Reels could either blend into your regular feed or appear in a separate downloads section.
Although smart downloads are not a novel concept, streaming platforms such as Netflix and YouTube have already implemented them, introducing this feature to Reels could revolutionize the experience, particularly in regions with unreliable internet connections.
Instagram has not confirmed a release date, and features in development don’t always reach the final app. Still, the level of detail in this leak indicates the company is serious, making offline Reels a likely addition in the near future. For now, users will need to stay online.
