Apple is reportedly preparing a major camera upgrade for its upcoming iPhone 18 Pro series, introducing a variable-aperture lens that could improve photo quality across different shooting conditions.
Unlike current fixed-aperture systems, which can struggle with blur in close-up and group shots due to shallow depth of field, the new system would allow the camera to automatically adjust its aperture. This could help keep subjects sharper while improving overall image balance in different lighting and distance scenarios.
The move comes as Apple looks to address long-standing camera limitations seen in recent models, including issues highlighted by users with the iPhone 17 Pro, where sharpness can drop in certain conditions.
Variable-aperture technology has been attempted before by other smartphone makers, but earlier versions were discontinued due to limited impact or hardware constraints. However, it has seen more success in some newer flagship devices from Chinese manufacturers, which use it to better manage focus and depth-of-field challenges.
According to reports, Apple’s supply chain is already gearing up for production, with key components such as lens actuators being manufactured and final assembly expected to begin in the coming months.
