Like many other apps offering premium tiers, WhatsApp is also moving toward a paid subscription model. Its parent company Meta has confirmed it is testing an optional service called WhatsApp Plus, designed for users who want more customization beyond the standard green-and-white interface. According to the company and early testers, including social media consultant Matt Navarra, WhatsApp Plus is largely a “cosmetic” upgrade, though it also includes a few additional tools.
Meta has not yet provided a firm timeline for a global launch. This initiative mirrors services like "Snapchat+" and "Instagram Plus," introducing a paid subscription level that prioritises personalisation and organisation over core features.
WhatsApp Plus: Limited User Testing Phase
The rollout has already begun on a small scale, with Android beta testers getting early access, while iOS users are expected to receive it later. Speaking to TechCrunch, a WhatsApp spokesperson confirmed that the company is currently testing WhatsApp Plus, an optional subscription aimed at users who want more control over how they organize and personalize the app.
They explained, “WhatsApp is testing a new, optional subscription called WhatsApp Plus, designed for users who want more ways to organise and personalise their experience," and added that premium features under consideration include expanded pinned chats, custom lists, and new chat themes. The initial limited rollout is intended to collect feedback and refine the offering before a wider release.
Meta has not officially announced the subscription price yet. However, according to a report from WABetaInfo, the company plans to introduce a low-cost subscription model. In Europe, WhatsApp Plus is expected to be priced at €2.49 per month. The subscription is reportedly set at PKR 229 per month in Pakistan and $29.00 per month in Mexico.
