Mozilla is stepping up its AI game with Firefox, introducing a new feature that lets users chat with an AI assistant while browsing. Dubbed ‘AI Window,’ the tool puts users in control, offering help and guidance without taking over their browsing experience, the non-profit shared in a November 13 blog post.

Mozilla announced that the AI Window feature in Firefox will not be activated by default. Users will need to opt-in to use it and have the option to disable it at any time. The AI-enhanced update is being developed as an open-source project.

The feature is currently being tested with users on a waitlist. Mozilla said that one can continue using Firefox as usual for a fully customizable experience, or switch to Private Window for maximum privacy. With AI Window, you now have the choice to opt in to our most intelligent and personalized browsing experience yet, offering new ways to navigate the web.

The AI Browser Boom

Mozilla's declaration arrives as technology firms compete to develop browsers enhanced with generative AI, reflecting a major shift in how users search for information on the internet. As AI reshapes online search, tech firms are racing to release AI-driven browsers.

Some, like Dia, swap the search bar for chatbots, while others, such as Perplexity’s Comet and ChatGPT Atlas, are entirely AI-centric. Mozilla aims to differentiate itself by prioritizing transparency, accountability, and user control, keeping the web open and accessible amid the AI surge.

“While others are building AI experiences that keep you locked in a conversational loop, we see a different path — one where AI serves as a trusted companion, enhancing your browsing experience and guiding you outward to the broader web,” Mozilla said.

As per Mozilla, users will never be locked into one ecosystem, and AI will not be forced into their browsing experience. They can decide when, how, or whether to use it at all. In June this year, Mozilla added an option allowing users to switch to Perplexity AI and make searches directly from the address bar via the unified search button.
