Nepal Gen-Z Protests: Once again, Gen-Z protesters took to the streets in Nepal on Thursday, prompting authorities to impose a curfew as demonstrations intensified across several areas. The renewed unrest highlights growing youth frustration and escalating tensions between young activists and the government.
According to The Kathmandu Post, demonstrators gathered at Simara Chowk in Bara district at approximately 11 a.m. on Thursday, prompting the police to disperse the crowd with force, which subsequently led to the imposition of a curfew. Reports indicate that the police discharged teargas canisters when the confrontation intensified near Simara Airport, leading to a suspension of airport operations.
The curfew in Simara was imposed at around 12.45 pm and will last till 8 pm, the report said. The Gen Z protestors accused the police of failing to arrest the individuals named in their complaints regarding the clashes that erupted on Wednesday.
On November 19, six Gen-Z supporters were injured in an altercation at Simara Chowk near Simara airport, after which they filed a complaint against six UML cadres. According to The Kathmandu Post, several more youth demonstrators were hurt in fresh clashes on Wednesday. Tensions escalated as UML leaders prepared to visit the district ahead of the March 5, 2026, elections.
This comes nearly two months after the deadly clashes in Nepal that erupted in September, in which 76 people were killed. The protests had forced then Prime Minister and Chairman of UML KP Oli to step down from the post.
After the fall of the Oli-led government new government was formed on 12th September under the leadership of former Chief Justice Sushila Karki, who, on the same day of appointment, recommended dissolving the parliament, calling for fresh elections.
