NIRF rankings 2025: Today, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan unveiled the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025, which annually ranks the leading universities, colleges, and institutes across India. IIT-Madras has retained its position as the top engineering college in the country and continues to dominate in the overall category.
The NIRF 2025 engineering rankings underscore the prominence of the IITs, featuring 9 IITs, including IIT Roorkee, in the lineup. Southern institutions like IIT Madras, IIT Hyderabad, and NIT Tiruchirappalli are further solidifying their standing among India's top engineering colleges.
Maintaining its successful run, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has secured the top spot in the engineering category, with IIT-Delhi and IIT-Bombay following in second and third place, respectively. IIT Madras has achieved the highest NIRF rank for the seventh year in a row in the overall category, with five additional IITs appearing in this year's top 10 rankings.
The rankings for this year have been published in 17 categories, including overall, SDGs institutes, universities, colleges, research institutions, engineering, management, pharmacy, medical, dental, law, architecture and planning, agriculture and allied sectors, open universities, skill universities, and state public universities.
The NIRF rankings are calculated using weighted criteria that differ by category, but generally include teaching, learning, and resources; research and professional practice; graduation results; outreach and inclusivity; and peer perception.
In the 2024 NIRF Rankings, IIT Madras maintained its leading position in both the overall and engineering categories last year. IISc Bangalore was at the forefront in the universities and research sectors, whereas IIT Roorkee excelled in architecture and planning. IIT Bombay achieved the top spot in innovation, and Hindu College was recognized as the best college.
