OpenAI has officially launched “Study Mode” within ChatGPT, marking a bold step to transform the chatbot from a quick-answer engine to a full-fledged educational companion. Announced in late July 2025, this feature is available to logged-in users across Free, Plus, Pro, and Team plans, and will soon be available to ChatGPT Edu subscribers.
Study Mode is an interactive learning environment that reimagines how students engage with AI for academic help. Rather than simply delivering direct answers, ChatGPT now acts as a tutor; guiding students through topics with questions, hints, and opportunities for self-reflection.
When a student submits a query, Study Mode prompts them with introductory questions such as their grade level or their prior familiarity with the topic.
The chatbot then scaffolds the learning experience, adjusting explanations based on the student’s responses, skill level, and goals. This method draws on the Socratic approach, fostering active participation and critical thinking rather than passive consumption of information.
OpenAI’s move comes amid rising concerns about students leveraging AI to shortcut learning and cheat on assignments. Study Mode counters this trend by embedding friction; students must engage with ideas, answer prompts, and grapple with new concepts before arriving at solutions. OpenAI hopes this approach will inspire “real learning,” moving students away from simple copy-paste habits.
The feature was developed with input from educators, cognitive scientists, and pedagogy experts from over 40 institutions, ensuring that methodologies align with modern learning science. By focusing on formative assessment, dialogue, and self-reflection, Study Mode equips learners with skills beyond rote memorization.
Getting started is simple. Users select “Study and learn” from the ChatGPT tools menu and describe their learning objectives, level, and any relevant deadlines. Study Mode can integrate uploaded materials like class notes or assignments, and is compatible across web, mobile, and desktop platforms. Advanced voice features and PDF support enrich the learning experience.
