As the world grapples with the tragic loss of Praveen Kumar Gampa, a 27-year-old Indian student from Telangana who was shot dead in the U.S., the spotlight falls on the safety and aspirations of Indian students studying abroad. Among these aspirants, Pune stands out as a hub for students pursuing higher education in foreign nations. With over 14,000 international students calling Pune home, the city is not only a preferred destination for global learners but also a launching pad for Indian students seeking master's degrees abroad. Pune's reputation as the "Oxford of the East" is well-deserved, with institutions like Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) and Symbiosis University offering top-notch education that attracts students from across India.

Pune's unique blend of affordability and cultural diversity makes it an ideal place for students to prepare for international studies. The city's vibrant festivals, diverse food culture, and historical heritage provide a holistic experience that prepares students for global environments. An Indian degree from Pune is highly regarded globally, which is why many students choose to study here before moving abroad. This strategic decision enhances their prospects in the competitive global job market.

However, the tragic incident involving Praveen Kumar Gampa highlights the need for enhanced safety measures for Indian students abroad. While Pune's students are well-prepared academically, it is crucial for both students and their families to be aware of the potential risks associated with studying abroad.

Over the past five years, at least 633 Indian students have died abroad across 41 countries, with the highest fatalities occurring in Canada (172) and the U.S. (108). These incidents range from violent crimes to accidents stemming from a lack of safety awareness. Former Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh Shringla emphasised the importance of host countries providing a safe environment for Indian students. This includes sensitizing local communities to prevent racism and violence. The Indian government closely monitors the welfare of students abroad, particularly in regions affected by tensions or violence. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has assured that embassies are proactive in ensuring student safety, with evacuation plans in place if needed.

While safety concerns exist, some countries are considered safer for Indian students due to their low crime rates and strong support systems:

  • Denmark: Known for its secure travel routes and respect for human rights.

  • Iceland: Offers a peaceful environment with minimal crime.

  • Germany: Has a strong economy and excellent public safety measures.

  • Canada: Despite recent incidents, it remains a popular destination with a high standard of living and low crime rates in many areas.
