Elon Musk’s Tesla has unveiled plans to build a robust electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in India as part of its imminent market entry, signaling a major push to support EV adoption in the country. Tesla is actively recruiting specialists in India to drive the development of its charging network, focusing on discovering and securing new charging locations in key urban centers like Delhi and Mumbai, and coordinating with property owners, government bodies, and other stakeholders to ensure timely deployment.

The company’s job postings highlight the role of a “charging developer” responsible for managing the pipeline of new charging sites, conducting feasibility assessments, negotiating agreements, and overseeing installation and operations. This infrastructure build-out is critical for Tesla to provide convenient and reliable charging options to current and future Tesla owners in India, addressing one of the biggest challenges in the country’s EV ecosystem.

Tesla’s move comes amid India’s rapid but nascent expansion of EV charging stations, with the government actively promoting infrastructure development through policies like FAME and PM E-DRIVE, and allocating significant funds to boost public-private partnerships for charging networks. However, challenges remain, including a high vehicle-to-charger ratio and limited fast-charging availability. Tesla’s entry and infrastructure investments could accelerate improvements and set new standards for EV charging in India.

While Tesla plans to initially import vehicles, including the updated Model Y, and open showrooms in major cities, its charging infrastructure strategy will play a pivotal role in the company’s success and in catalyzing India’s transition to electric mobility.
