VinFast, the rapidly growing Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer, is poised to begin commercial production at its ambitious $2 billion EV plant in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu by the end of July 2025. This high-profile launch marks a pivotal moment in India’s electric vehicle landscape, as VinFast aims to compete directly with global and domestic auto giants by leveraging local manufacturing and a robust product pipeline.
The facility is designed as an integrated EV production ecosystem, encompassing manufacturing, supply chain partnerships, and after-sales services. Recent developments include the onboarding of 200 local professionals at the plant and collaborations with partners like myTVS and RoadGrid to bolster charging infrastructure and service support.
Initially eyed as part of a global rollout, VinFast’s India push arrives as the company pivots its focus towards Asia amid uncertainties and project delays in North America. While work on a $4 billion facility in North Carolina, USA, has been deferred until at least 2028, Vietnam’s largest EV maker is accelerating its India and Indonesia entries. The Indian operation underscores VinFast’s commitment to tap into one of the world’s fastest-growing EV markets.
VinFast will debut in India by launching two premium electric SUVs, the VF 6 and VF 7. Pre-bookings for these models officially opened on July 15, 2025, through VinFast’s showrooms and official website, with a fully refundable reservation amount of ₹21,000. The company plans to begin public sales and commence deliveries from August 2025.
Both the VF 6 and VF 7 are tailored for Indian roads, offering:
Real-world electric range optimized for city commutes and intercity travel
Advanced tech and premium interiors, catering to India’s growing appetite for luxury EVs
Local assembly to ensure competitive pricing and long-term market presence.
Additionally, smaller electric models have been trademarked and are expected to broaden VinFast’s portfolio in India over the coming years.
VinFast’s Indian strategy extends beyond manufacturing, with plans for an extensive dealership and service network covering 27 cities in the initial phase. The brand’s first showroom on Mount Road, Chennai, is already operational, showcasing its EV line. Partnerships with local aftermarket providers and charging infrastructure companies further strengthen the brand’s offering for Indian consumers.
VinFast’s entry arrives at a pivotal time as India’s EV market heats up, bringing international expertise, investment, and fresh competition to the sector. The facility also supports Tamil Nadu’s ambitions to become a leading hub for electric mobility in Asia.
