Comedian and actor Vir Das on Monday publicly accused quick-commerce platform Zepto of delivering what he suspected was a counterfeit Apple Watch worth ₹50,000, setting off a social media storm before the platform resolved the complaint within hours.
What Happened
Das posted on X sharing images of the watch he received, questioning its authenticity. He said the device had been ordered urgently for a professional shoot, and that when he contacted Zepto's customer care, he was told nothing could be done. He called it a "full scam" and described the product as a suspected China-made copy.
The post gained rapid traction, with thousands of users responding and several sharing similar experiences of receiving counterfeit or incorrect products through quick-commerce platforms.
Zepto's Response
Zepto responded publicly on X, acknowledging the complaint and initiating a reverse pickup of the product. The company said it was investigating the matter in coordination with its brand partners and noted that high-value orders on its platform require an OTP verification at the point of delivery.
Approximately five hours after his original post, Das updated his followers confirming that a genuine Apple Watch had been delivered as a replacement. "Real watch has been delivered," he wrote.
The incident reignited concerns about buying high-value electronics through quick-commerce platforms, with many users urging customers to purchase premium devices from authorised retailers. It also raised fresh questions about product authenticity, vendor verification and quality control, amid recurring complaints of counterfeit electronics in India.
