Pune FC Road Vehicle Fine: AI-based cameras have been installed to monitor traffic on the famous Fergusson College Road in Pune. Now, the traffic challan issued by these AI cameras has sparked a debate over automatic enforcement and the definition of obstructions according to traffic rules.
In the challan issued on July 14, a vehicle parked on the yellow line was mentioned, and a fine of 500 rupees was imposed for obstructing traffic. This fine was also supported by photos from AI-based cameras installed on the roadside. The vehicle owner challenged the allegation of violation, stating that the vehicle had stopped for a short time and was not obstructing traffic.
After this incident, Pune Traffic Police issued a clarification on July 21, stating that FC Road is a no-parking and no-halting zone. According to traffic officials, any vehicle stopped for more than 60 seconds is subject to action. The AI camera system is designed to automatically detect and penalize those violating the rules in this manner.
The clarification further emphasizes that the AI system is designed to enhance enforcement efficiency and reduce human intervention in monitoring high-traffic areas.
This incident has sparked various reactions on social media, with some users suggesting legal avenues, while others have raised questions about the calibration and implementation of AI systems. Meanwhile, one group has even demanded AI-based surveillance on traffic personnel, and some have expressed concerns about road conditions compared to strict enforcement.
The vehicle owner has submitted a formal appeal for the review of the challan, attaching some evidence to contest the claim of obstruction.
