WhatsApp may soon roll out an optional paid subscription called “WhatsApp Plus.” Reports suggest the platform is testing a premium tier that could offer additional customisation options and enhanced chat controls for users seeking a more personalised experience. The plan is expected to introduce paid features while keeping WhatsApp’s core messaging services free for all users.
WA BetaInfo identified the feature in the Android beta version 2.26.9.12. The subscription service is under development for both Android and iOS platforms. If introduced, it would be the first instance of WhatsApp charging individual users for an optional premium tier since its inception in 2009.
This choice suggests a broader shift in Meta's strategy for generating revenue from WhatsApp, given that its private messaging format limits traditional advertising. Introducing a subscription model could provide a more consistent income while keeping the main service free.
Early reports suggest the subscription will focus on customisation features, allowing users to change the app’s look and sound with themes, accent colours, and up to 14 app icons. Subscribers may also get exclusive stickers, new chat ringtones, and enhanced message reactions.
The premium tier could increase the number of pinned chats from three to as many as 20, helping users keep important conversations at the top. Meta is also testing a waiting list for early access among Android beta users.
Core WhatsApp features, including messaging, calls, media sharing, and end-to-end encryption, will remain free. The company is also reportedly exploring a separate ad-free subscription for the Updates tab in some regions, though pricing and a launch timeline for WhatsApp Plus have not yet been announced.
