The bleeding warrior

Amrita Prasad

Remember SRK’s iconic dialogue, ‘Kabhi kabhi jeetne ke liye kuch haarna bhi padta hai ... aur haar kar jeetne waale ko baazigar kehte hai’? Well, something similar happened during the finals of Indian Premier League where Chennai Super Kings (CSK) battled it out with Mumbai Indians. Although CSK did lose the trophy to MI by merely a run, batsman, Shane Watson, won everyone’s heart and became internet’s sweetheart.

Chasing a modest target of 150, when most of the Chennai batsmen failed to deliver, Watson took them over the line, but ultimately was declared run out in the last over. Although the Men in Yellow lost the finals, Watson received a lot of praise on social media after fans got to know that he was playing with a bleeding knee. Despite the injury, the Australia batsman scored 80 runs off 59 balls and changed the momentum of the game in Chennai’s favour. CSK was close to victory but a superb slow ball from Lasith Malinga powered MI to win their fourth IPL title.

A day after the finale, CSK off-spinner Harbhajan Singh revealed that Watson, the right-handed batsman and a right-handed fast-medium swing bowler, had played with a bleeding knee during the run chase. Twitteratis are in awe of Watto’s fighting spirit and have hailed him as a true warrior. That’s the dedication of a true blue sportsman!
