Satyajit Ray’s ‘Goopi Gyne Bagha Byne’s to get a Hindi twist

Sakal Times

As the year 2019 marks the 50th year of Satyajit Ray’s classic Goopi Gyne Bagha Byne, a Hindi animation version of the film is all set to release. Goopi Gawaiya Bagha Bajaiya (GGBB) is a film based on the classic characters Goopi and Bagha which were created by Satyajit Ray’s grandfather Upendra Kishore Roychowdhury. Satyajit da had directed Goopi Gyne... in Bengali based on the story written by his grandfather. The film released in 1969.

The animation, directed by acclaimed illustrator and designer Shilpa Ranade, has been nominated and awarded at many film festivals in India and abroad. Ranade has illustrated many children’s books written by veteran writer-lyricist Gulzar. Says she, “I had read the story and the beauty of the story is that you can reinterpret, revisualise it in your own way without letting it lose its essence. Hence it is relevant even after so many years.”

The film is a modern adaptation with today’s language. Says Shilpa, “A film has to be relatable. The idea was to engage people of today’s generation. Hence the language is how people talk today.”

Sandeep Ray, son of Satyajit Ray has seen and supported the film.
