Anybody who watches every superhero film that comes out must be suffering from a kind of fatigue, but Hollywood keeps churning them out without pausing for breath. After a while, you can’t tell them apart or even recall what happened in the last Marvel Cinematic Universe movie.

Spider-Man: Far From Home, directed by Jon Watts, comes just a few weeks after the massive Avengers: Endgame in which Spiderman’s mentor and hero Tony Stark/Ironman (Robert Downey Jr) died and so did many others — not that death prevents the characters from reappearing! Now Peter Parker/ Spiderman (Tom Holland), takes a summer vacation with classmates Ned (Jacob Batalon), Betty (Angourie Rice), and, of course, his hearthrob MJ (Zendaya). 

But then, superheroes can never really chill. Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) follows Peter to Venice, because he needs the webswinger’s help in dealing with a bunch of baddies called The Elementals. Then there’s Quentin Beck aka Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal), from an alternate reality who is also supposedly fighting the Elementals, but has a different agenda.

Like in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Peter is thrown into the deep end, with some help from Stark’s best friend Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) and the indestructible Aunt May (Marisa Tomei).

The wide-eyed and amazingly innocent-looking Holland, holds the film together, because apart from saving the world, he also has real emotional connections for the people who care for him. The mayhem and mindboggling action is to be expected in a superhero movie, but this one also has humour and a coming-of-age feel, as young Spidey understands that wearing the suit means there is no escaping the responsibilities that come with power.

The film is enjoyable while it lasts, the end credits are fun, and of course there is more of the same coming from MCU, hopefully no more this year!
