Be it marrying a younger guy (Nick Jonas), her red carpet looks or sitting with PM Modi wearing a dress — our desi girl Priyanka Chopra Jonas attracts the attention of social media users and a lot of time, the wrong way.

Recently, the Baywatch actress featured on the cover of InStyle US magazine, wearing a bedazzling golden sequined saree by Tarun Tahiliani, sans the blouse, reminding us of her look in the song Desi Girl.

Her sculpted back did give us some fitness goals. While she looked sultry and glamorous, many Indians were  miffed at her for wearing a saree without a blouse or choli and started trolling and slut shaming her for ‘ruining our culture.’ 

While on the magazine cover, Priyanka claims, ‘I want to change the world,’ the actor posted the picture of the magazine on her Instagram account with the caption, “Fashion is such an important part of global culture, often arising from centuries of tradition, and doesn’t go out of style when the seasons change. The ‘saree’ is one of the most iconic and recognised silhouettes from India. To me, its beauty lies in its versatility, not just in drape and fabric. It embodies elegance, femininity, and power, and I love how I feel when I’m wearing one.” 

However, it seems like netizens are extremely angry at the actress for having ‘portrayed our culture in the wrong way,’ and instead of feeling proud of her achievements and showcasing an Indian garment on an international magazine, she is being bullied for her sartorial choice, exposing her sexy back and being ‘vulgar’.

In a country like India, it is tough for a woman, be it a homemaker or a global sensation like PeeCee, to wear what she wants, and that indeed is a matter of shame! What it more appalling is that many of the trolls are ‘educated’ women. Although, some of the sensible netizens did come up and point out that choli-less sarees have been a way of clothing in India, the mindset of most people is still regressive.
