‘I am not chasing a career in films’

Debarati Palit

Actress Madhurima Tuli is set to play the title role in Ekta Kapoor’s Chandrakanta, the finite series going on air today (June 24) on Colors channel.

Madhurima, who was last seen in Anil Kapoor’s 24, which aired on the same channel, says that her character is strong, independent and vulnerable. “The audience will see her as a warrior. As the show progresses, she will know why she is a warrior and will fight back,” she says while promoting the weekend show.

This the third adaptation of Devaki Nandan Khatri’s novel of the same name. Currently, another adaptation of Chandrakanta is on air.

Madhurima says that their show is different from other Chandrakanta adaptations screened on television. “The concept of the show is same but we have presented it in a different way. Our series is all about the magic, fantasy, hatred and revenge. We have concentrated on the visual effects and creatively it’s beautiful,” says Madhurima who was also part of reality show I Can Do That.

The actress says the cast and crew is aware that comparisons between the shows is bound to happen and they are ready for it.

This is the first time Madhurima is being part of a fantasy show. Was it a challenge for her? “The challenge we had at hand was to make it real. Also, the audience should accept me as Chandrakanta and I had to convince the audience that my character can do magic, yet be real,” she says, adding, “Because it’s a mythological series, the Hindi dialogues are very pure. I had to struggle with that and along with that, there are action scenes which I had to perform.”

Madhurima says that like everyone else, she has been a big fan of Chandrakanta which aired on Doordarshan in the ’90s. “I loved the character of Krur Singh and his eyebrows were also fascinating. By doing this show, I am reliving those memories. I am so grateful to Ekta for that. Shikha Swaroop (who played the original Chandrakanta) had done such a fantastic job and she was so beautiful. I have tried to give my own touch to such an iconic character. I could have copied the character but it wouldn’t have been the same,” she adds.

Madhurima is keeping her fingers crossed and hopes that the audience will accept the show. “But I am aware that the audience can also reject it. That’s a challenge for us but I completely trust Ekta’s vision. This is a product from Balaji and Ekta gives 200 per cent to whatever she does.

She did Naagin, which was different from other shows. I am sure people will enjoy Chandrakanta too,” says the actress who has worked with the producer in Kumkum Bhagya.

The actress had taken a break from television to concentrate on films. She had a special role in Baby and Naam Shabana but Madhurima refuses to call it a break. “Honestly, I am not chasing a career in films. Baby just happened to me as I couldn’t refuse Neeraj Pandey. I always go with the flow. If something exciting comes my way, I will take it up,” she asserts.

She adds that Chandrakanta  is no less than a film for her. “It’s a big break for me, so I am focusing on the show. I want to give my 200 per cent to the show,” she says before signing off.
