Following the Indian Meteorological Department’s (IMD) issuance of a Red Alert for extremely heavy rainfall across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region on Friday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has intensified its emergency measures to address any rain-related emergencies. The civic authority provided updates on X, emphasizing its continuous monitoring operations and readiness to safeguard the public as heavy downpours persist across the city.
Top officials review situation from disaster management room
The BMC stated that Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar, and Deputy Commissioner (Public Health) Sharad Ughade are closely monitoring the changing weather conditions from the Emergency Management Room. Images released by the civic body depict senior officials tracking real-time updates, coordinating with multiple departments, and supervising the city’s emergency response efforts.
The BMC stated that Commissioner Ashwini Bhide is personally overseeing the situation across Mumbai via nearly 10,000 CCTV cameras positioned at critical points. This extensive surveillance system is being utilized to monitor waterlogging, traffic flow, rainfall intensity, and any emergencies that demand swift action.
26 administrative wards on standby
The civic authority has ordered all 26 Assistant Commissioners in charge of Mumbai’s administrative wards to stay at their respective offices and exercise complete oversight of local conditions. They have been instructed to coordinate swiftly with disaster management teams and to address citizens’ complaints without delay.
At the same time, close to 10,000 BMC personnel have been stationed throughout the city to support residents and handle rain-related crises. On-ground teams are keeping watch over low-lying zones, clearing stormwater drains when required, responding to reports of fallen trees, and assisting with emergency response efforts.
The BMC’s latest announcement underscores the administration’s increased state of readiness as Mumbai faces intense monsoon conditions. Officials have advised residents to exercise caution, refrain from going outdoors unless essential during heavy downpours, and adhere to official guidelines issued by civic bodies and meteorological authorities.
